Because alternative sexualities are gaining acceptance? Because the idea of living forever (even if undead) is so alluring? The reasons are unclear. What is clear is that the hottest subgenre (in both... (read more)

Thought I would like this so I bought the first two books but... just couldn't get into it as much as I wanted to. I like strong female leads and Damali is, but her story just didnt seem to flow that well, and her supporting cast, I ended up not caring about. I don't think I will continue with the series.

Minion by L.A. Banks : First in her vampire huntress series. The version I read has a new beginning and added scenes as the writer has a website and takes cues from her readers. There are several in the series now so readers must have needed a bit more initial information or clarification. The author’s writing style is down to earth and to the point, the dialogue young and hip, her multicultural ensemble of characters are believable in their struggle against fear as their resolve is tested.

Damali is a Neteru, a vampire huntress coming into her own at 21. Her guardians rescued her from certain death as an infant and she has gone through rigorous training her entire life to rid the world of vampires and demons. At 21, her powers are becoming overwhelming and confusing as they increase in intensity but this ain’t no Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Lately, her ‘hood is being threatened by a new type of evil, a hybrid that is proving to be the deadliest enemy the Neteru and her guardians have come up against. Can she protect Carlos Rivera, the man from her past that she denied but can’t get out of her system?

I enjoyed the way Banks plays with the vampire legends and is creative in incorporating new and scary elements into the genre. The erotic scenes are realistically described as nothing fades to black. Initially, slow but the creativity held my interest as did Carlos Rivera.

3/5 stars Worth reading if you enjoy the genre with some new twists but I find the only thing that makes me want to read anymore is Carlos. Having said that, I don't feel a sense of urgency to run out and get the next book.
