One of the few Terry Pratchett novels that can be read without prerequisites (although knowing the characters from the City Watch novels and The Truth helps), it follows a young woman who dresses up as a boy to protect her brother, drafted into the army of a mad little nation run by religious zealots that can't stop making war on other countries (sound familiar?). To reveal anything else would ruin the book, but as usual Pratchett is a brilliant satirist and creates wise, human stories. This...
