One of the best mystery/romantic suspense novels ever written. And probably one of the earlier ones at that. This takes place shortly after World War II in southern France. I can't imagine why they haven't made a movie out of this, it would be sensational.

This is one of Mary Stewart's best, when she was writing contemporary thrillers... er, when contemporary was late 1940's or early 1950's, when the memory of World War Two was still bitterly fresh.
The descriptions of the place, of Southern France, of Arles and the countryside around Les Baux are vivid and beautiful - yes, this is what the place really looks like. But it is truely another world, where strict food rationing and shortages still held sway in England, and it was a rare and unusual accomplishment for a woman to be able to drive a fast car, and to do it well.
It's a lovely book, with a witty and accomplished heroine, a dark and threatening hero, an endearing little boy and the darkest and nastiest of villians. Highly recommended.

Stewart imbues her story with a sense of urgency through bizarre and unrelated events which somehow impact the present, resulting in surprising twists and plot developments that make you marvel at the cleverness of her foresight. It doesn’t hurt that she takes the effort and time to set the story, so you are treated to a travel journal taking you through the lovely South of France while on a thrilling adventure with the heroine.
