This is better than a bath in Dr. Bronner's pure castile soap, and more informative, too. I bet you don't know half a dozen hobo names at present, but think of who you can impress after you memorize a list of 700 hobo names! Do you know the presidents who had hooks for hands? What a furry...

Didn’t Like It

I know that John Hodgman is part of Daily Show fame and whatnot, but I really didn't think this book was humorous. Most of the time I was scratching my head, thinking..."now how is THIS humorous?". That said, I did laugh out loud a couple times, and STILL read his second book.

Funny, but a little too silly and self-indulgent.

This was the funniest book I read, until the sequel came out.

You can only take John Hodgman in small bites. If you're going to read a book of his, it's best to read small bits at a time. After a while of just plowing through the chapters, you get a little worn down by his silliness. But some of the stuff was SO FREAKING BIZARRE that I loved it. It's a funny book to have lying around for company to flip through. Almost like a Dave Barry book - only way weirder.

A potato chip. Fun, but not filling.

Okay, I only heard of Hodgman due to the Apple ads. Being the good Apple fanboy I am, I delved a bit into him on Wikipedia and realised he has written a book. I read an excerpt somewhere and it had me smirking. I purchased the book and goddamn, I was crying with laughter.

I read Areas of my Expertise on the train and I had to put it away when I came across the section on lobsters as people were staring at me laughing to myself.

I have never enjoyed a book so much in a long, long time. It's so absurd, but with a hint of truth to make you second guess. I loved it. Not everyone will, granted. But if you like a bit of off-beat, cynical humour, you'll enjoy it too.

Funny and quirky with absolutley silly references but I could only take a little at a time.
