Sometimes you need a man lke Larry, although fictious, to tell you that it's all right if all you want to do up to a point in your life is try to discover yourself by learning and constant searching of randomness. I've understood so well that physical labour can take your thoughts off anything and give you your free time as well as I started believing that some years ago you could still find (maybe now you can too if you are prepared to) a wise man in India who could lead you towards your own acception of the illumination. I loved the passage of time on the Cote D'azur and I literally felt myself entering into a new age of the world, as Eliott's uniform had dissapeared along with him. And well, in the ending, it was the most personal dialogue I ever had with a writer, after all the explanations and excuses he made throughout the book.

I enjoyed the book and found some of Larry's adventures to remind me of the book Germinal by Zola.

I like Maugham's writing style too.

This book makes me sad for some of the folks in it, but it reminds me of Lord Jim in the way it mostly makes me sad that I could not have made the trek described within, not that Conrad and Somerset write that much alike.

I love how this book is written--it's like you're personally connected to the author, as well as the characters. Larry was particularly inspiring. Now I want to read more Maugham novels.
