“Beautiful lyrical prose but not the best storyline Burke's ever come up with. I would have preferred the full edition but could only find an abridged audio book. As usual Will Patton's narration is faultless.”

Good writer, I like his style. I'll be reading more books by James Lee Burke about his character Dave Robicheaux.”

“This is a story that shows the spiritual and compassionate side of Det. David Robicheaux of the New Iberia, Louisiana sheriff's department.
As the story opens, there has been a murder of a nineteen-year-old prostitute. Her body was also mutilated.
When Dave sees the body and that the woman's purse was still in the night-club she had been attending, he suspects that the woman knew her killer and that it wasn't random.
We also see a childhood acquaintance of Dave's move back into town and become involved in a movie being made about the Civil War. This man, Julie Balboni has mob ties and the sheriff wants Dave to encourage him, Julie Balboni, to leave New Iberia.
As the movie is being made, Dave meets the star, Elwood Sykes, who has a problem with alcohol and Dave and he form an interesting relationship.
During the investigation, there are times that Civil War figures appear to Dave with words of philosophy or advice.
The plot is excellently written with a number of plot twists that add to the interest and make the story very interesting and unpredictable.
Dave Robicheaux is an excellent character, loved by his fans and he shows again why he is so popular.
The setting of the New Orleans area and a possible storm heading for them is also interesting.”
“Fascinating detective work.”

He is a little too violent and physical for me but I love his writing, characters, and great mystery plots. His location helps with the attraction. when you read one of his books, you feel as if you are visiting Louisiana and absorbing its climate and people and culture.”
