An inspiring book about building great software. The mantra less is more is preached loud and clear with lots of practical examples of how companies can focus on the important things by embracing constraints. I would consider this a must-read for anyone in the web/software industry.

Getting Real is a quick read and the book's layout brings to mind a literary journal or book of poetry, which adds to its appeal. The writing is a bit cocky and I found it often didn't take the subtle nuances of client-vendor relationships when building web apps into consideration, but overall the book was chock full of great advice for not only developers but designers, project managers, writers and business owners as well.

Getting Real is an outstanding series of essays about the rapid web start-up and development process. Whether or not you agree with every single suggestion - this book is a fine asset for anyone working in the web 2.0 space. I highly recommend this book.

Very quick read with some intuitive but out of the box advise. Although I don't build web apps, I build Windows apps for internal users, most of the Get Real development process fits. Getting Real puts laser focus on the user and I specifically like the "Design the UX first" mantra.

It seems that most of the books on how to deal with all the complexity of designing and developing Web-based software address very arcane problems from either a technical point of view or a point of view that says, "this is the correct theory of how you are supposed to do software". The authors of the book are a team that has actually figured out how to design really decent, useful Web applications and how to make the process of creation work-at the right time, and with the right amount of attention. The book is not another unreadable textbook of academic theory on computer science and project management, nor is it filled with technical examples that address just a few types of programmers. Instead is a very readable collection of essays written "from the trenches."

As a professional programmer and Web developer, 37signals has put together a lot of statements with which I can identify. These essays are a good starting point for any Web design start-up trying to put together a business plan.
