“Classical book on managing software projects. The book was written in 70s and is now a bit funny to read.”

I don't care how long ago it was written. It is just as true today.

Having said that, a lot of the essays are dated (we are talking punch cards), but a lot of the theories and philosophies are timeless.”

Brooks identified many fundamental rules for successful project management that many IT project managers continue to break. When I taught at University, I assigned as one of the course texts and it was immensely useful. In IT management, I have all my IT staff read it.
However, many of the fundamentals of project management apply to other disciplines, too (focused teams, exponential communication costs, adding more people makes it later, etc.). I'd heartily recommend this book to anyone managing medium/large scale projects. There's definitely stuff in there for you, too!”
“A very smart friend of mine gave me his copy of this book. If you ever want to supervise software coding, this is a must read.”

I have used this book to guide me on the current projects I manage, and, hopefully, avoid the pitfalls of software development.
Did I mention ALL people in software development must read this book??? :)”
“The nature and application of software has changed radically 30 years since Brooks wrote this classic. Sadly, human nature has not -- engineering flesh is still heir to the thousand natural shocks that he describes. Thus, despite all the silver bullets we in software development have been offered over the years, Dr. Brooks analysis is still painfully accurate. ”
