Dragonsdawn (Dragonriders of Pern)

by Anne McCaffrey

The beautiful planet Pern seemed a paradise to its new colonists - until unimaginable terror turned it into hell. Very interesting book about the first settlement at Landing and how the dragons of Pern came to be! Anne McCaffrey still manages to be engaging and suspenseful to readers who have already read other books in the series, and I would recommend reading other Dragonriders of Pern books before this one to get an idea of the culture. Anyone who is put off by a way out premise needs to read another genre. Most sci-fi is base on the author's vision of a possible future. Some part of it is usually hard to swallow when placed in the "real world." The creation of the dragons really isn't...humans manipulate genetics all the time.

    "It's not the ...." - what?

I've always wondered, and haven't figured is out as yet (though it may be quite obvious), what Avril Bitra means, when she on page 236 crashes into the red star, screaming (and I quote): "Oh sh*t! It's not the - oh sh****t". It's not the what?
