I love her Pern books, and I'm reading her Pegasus adventures now. I can't say her "Rowan" continuation is so good, nor Acorna. When you write as...” see full review » see other reviews » |

It was the first time I'd read a science fiction book that involved dragons and I have always loved the story.”

This was a fascinating extension to McCaffrey's Dragonriders series. The colonist's discovery of Thread and their early attempts at fighting it is fascinating, along with how they started breeding dragons. While slow at times, the whole feeling is one of satisfaction.”

Suddenly deadly spores were falling like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything-and everyone-in their path. It began to look as if the colony, cut off from Earth and lacking the resources to combat the menace, was doomed.
Then some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragonlike lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety. If only, they thought, the dragonets were big enough for a human to ride and intelligent enough to work as a team with a rider...
And so they set their most talented geneticist to work to create the creatures Pern so desperately needed-Dragons!”
“Very interesting book about the first settlement at Landing and how the dragons of Pern came to be! Anne McCaffrey still manages to be engaging and suspenseful to readers who have already read other books in the series, and I would recommend reading other Dragonriders of Pern books before this one to get an idea of the culture. (March 2008)”
