I think highly of Julian May, specifically the four volumes of the Saga of Pliocene Exile. You'll want to keep a dictionary handy when you read these (which I found refreshing), although she dumbed down the vocabulary some in the subsequent Intervention and Galactic Milieu books (no doubt at the behest of her publisher.) I have yet to sample any of her more recent work, but I expect it will be just as good.

To tell the truth, I never made it past the first volume. I loved the idea and the setting, but simply didn't enjoy the writing style. Maybe I'll get back to the series some day.

I am consistently surprised at how few U.S. S/F readers know this series! Julian May melds science fiction and outlines of Faerie with excellent results. Interesting, varied characters frequently surprise the reader and themselves. Stands up to repeated reading.

This is my favorite multi-volume saga, The Saga of the Pliocene Exile. They include this title, The Many-Colored Land, The Golden Torc, The Nonborn King, and The Adversary. The other related books are good but this is still the best. It is a time travel adventure. The future is no place for misfits, and so they take a one way ticket back to the past. 6 million years ago.
