Lakshmi lives in Nepal with her mother, brother, and step-father. Lakshmi's family is so poor they barley afford food. Lakshmi's mother, Ama, works very hard caring things back and forth for the men that work. With that money Lakshmi's step-father gambles it away at the Tea House. Lakshmi goes to school and she is top of her class. Lakshmi loves school, playing with her friend Gita and her goat. But when the Himalayan rains wash away all the family's crops, the family is left with nothing. So Lakshmi's step father sends her off to work for a family to support her family. Lakshmi is tricked into thinking that she will be a maid, but really she is sold into prostitution. Lakshmi moves to a brothel in India to work. She lives in a house called, "The happiness House," with other girls, until she pays off her families debt. Lakshmi's world in a blur, as she lives life at it's worst.
I would give this book five stars. I would rate it the book so high, because of the depth of the writing. This book is a real page turner, because there is no dull part of the book. Patricia McCormick writes about some very hard issues in descriptive vignettes. Sold is written in first person, so the reader can really fell what Lakshmi is going through. ”
“This book was an interesting adventure that made me realize how lucky i really am.”

Lakshmi is even promised in marriage to a young boy there from the village. When Gita goes to work as a maid in the city, Lakshmi sees the things she can get her family with the money she brings in from her job. Despite the family living in poverty, they are making do until her step-father's poor money decisions and severe weather push them into financial crisis. Then a women from the city comes to their house and pays Lakshmi's step-father to take Lakshmi into the city for work. So Lakshmi goes with the woman all the way to Calcutta, India, where the woman forces Lakshmi to work in a brothel of young girls. Lakshmi initially refuses, but she is beaten and starved. Finally Lakshmi is too numb and weak to protest further, and she becomes just another body in the forced prostitution house known as Happiness House. Men come and go, taking what they have no right to take from a girl barely old enough to take it. The warden and other girls there induce abortions with herbal teas and pills. Finally, Lakshmi is moved to the bottom floor because she is no longer a virgin and is no longer worth as much money. She meets other girls, who try to take care of her and themselves as much as possible, and she makes friends with girld and even a boy alike. She saves up as much money as possible to perhaps buy back her freedom one day, but her plight is practically hopeless. One day an American comes and pays for Lakshmi's services, but he only asks her questions in private. Little does she know it then, but he is the one who will bring her the freedom that she covets. He organizes a raid and eventually is able to bring the authorities - who had once looked the other way when they would receive bribes from the warden woman - to shut down the place and free the girls.
This is a difficult and disturbing book to read because of the topic, but it is well worth the read to become aware of a world out there that few people know exist. For me, I will make this book available to my students, who are 9th - 12th grade. I think this is an important piece of literature to read because reading the book allows the real-life Lakshmis out there to have their story told. If it was you in her shoes, sold into child prostitution via human trafficking, wouldn't you want someone to listen to your story? ”
“We joke about prostitution and slavery isnt really a major deal to most of us in this day in age but Sold is an eye opener. After i read this i was completely unaware of what people in Nepal went through with their daughters or sisters or aunts that go away for work and never come back home. An innocent girl who only wants to help make her family a living in this book is sold in to slavery and it unaware. She is there for years before she is rescued. An american came in one day and saw her and asked if she wanted help and gave her his card when she decided to call him he came back for her and saved her but many young girls never get away and are simply thrown away when there are "used up" Patricia McCormick depicts this amazingly in this book and its a blessing to read. it is a humbler”
