It's an omnibus of 3 books. the first book, "The Rebel Angels" - which is set in a university and has Davies at his wittiest. It also celebrates the sheer joy of knowledge and learning. "Bred in the Bones" follows the life of a art patron, and explores the forces that shapes a life. A study of art and psychology. The final book, "The Lyre of Orpheus" is about a group of people trying to stage a lost opera - and at the end, it's also about art, love and forgiveness.
Robertson Davies always goes for the BIG themes - but he does it with heart, and with so much warmth. Personally I think it's superior to "The Deptford Trilogy", also by Robertson Davies.”
