The Winter King (The Arthur Books #1)

The Winter King: A Novel of Arthur (The Warlord Chronicles: I)

by Bernard Cornwell

It takes a remarkable writer to make an old story as fresh and compelling as the first time we heard it. With The Winter King, the first volume of his magnificent Warlord Chronicles, Bernard Cornwell finally turns to the story he was born to write: the mythic saga of King Arthur.

The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared,... (read more)

O rei Artur numa versão muito mais realista e adequada ao tempo em que viveu. Interessante

What can I say, I've read many of Bernard's book and have yet to find a bad one, but this book puts the majority of his other works in the shade. It was unputdownable, I was looking for any excuse to find 5 minutes or so to read it. That said, it was a pity that some aspects of the story were predictable.

I'll close this by asking myself a question. Why did I put off reading this book until now?

The Winter King is the first book in The Warlord Chronicles series by Bernard Cornwell. The trilogy tells the legend of Arthur seen through the eyes of his follower Derfel Cadarn.
It's the best saga u could find, it's moving, adventurous, drammatic and epic.
I had a special time reading each one of
those 5 books . And, at the end, i couldn't avoid to feel overwhelmed.

By far the best story of Arthur (and all of the other rich characters) I have read. I also have the audio tape versions, some of which are worn out, of all three books in this story. Cornwell researches and writes in such a way that makes the characters believable.
If you are looking for tales of dragons and the supernatural you would be disappointed - but, for me, this was a major plus point.

Bernard Cornwell wrote a series of three novels referred to as The Arthur Books beginning with The Winter King and including Enemy of God and Excalibur. They are an excellent series of Arthurian Legend fantasy! I met him at his book signing in Toronto and found him to be a very charismatic Englishman. This is a book that I used to own and lent to someone who never gave it back...I hate it when that happens!

Fantastic book. You see Arthur as a soldier and a man, and it's really gripping

Arthurian saga part 1 of 3. I found it pretty dense and hard to read in the beggining, but it eventually grew on me. Very weird to imagine Morgan Le Fey all deformed.
