What an amazing story, but not so well written book.

Although a bit droll and slow in parts -- Franks is a soldier, not a storyteller -- the story is still an engaging one. After dropping out of college and losing his father, Franks joined the army in 1967 and rose through through the ranks to become the man who led the U.S. into Afghanistan after 9/11 and into Iraq in 2003. It is interesting to read about what was going on behind the scenes during the tense moments, as well as the general's honest appraisal of how matters are shaping up, and what to expect in the future.

I read this because I really know nothing about recent American wars, and was interested in what happened in Afghanistan. I went into this realizing this guy was obviously going to come at the story from the point of view of a miltary general, and as expected, he was very pro-military, and his politics came into it pretty often, especially his huge love for President Bush. I learned some interesting stuff about the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and how our military pretty much blew the Afghani army apart. What was annoying was that this was written after the US "won" the war in Iraq, so the author talks like that war was a victory just like the war in Afghanistan, but he never addresses the fact that US military people are still getting killed in both countries. An interesting book as long as you keep in mind that this is one man's story.

I feel I am dumber for having listened to this book. Sorry, Tommy.

I own this book but haven't been able to get through it. I admire Tommy Franks but feel that the book was just too long.
