Bless Me Ultima was set in New Mexico during World War, this has a really big effect on the story's plot.Antonio has three older brothers who are all soldiers and are currently away at war. This causes tension on Tony’s family. His mother is constantly worried and praying for her sons. Both his parents feel bitter towards the war for taking away their children, especially his father. Another important part is Lupito's death, Lupito is a soldier that came back to New Mexico and during a PTSD episode kills the sheriff resulting in his death. This was Tony’s first experience with death and threatens his innocence. The war also had an effect on all the people in the town. The women are constantly in mourning and wearing black. They are always dreading news about a death of a loved one.
Antonio is a young boy of 6 years. Parts of what he is like is because of his age, like being nervous to go to school without his mom Maria. On the other hand Tony is much more special that other kids. Especially compared to his naughty classmates Tony is much serious, and vigilant of his surroundings. He has a questioning mind, a great deal of moral curiosity, and at his young age does not view life as a game. Even though Tony is being pressured by his parents to choose his destiny; becoming a Luna or Marez.
One character that changes the entire plot is Ultima. She is a curandera (healer) that was present at Antonio's birth. She becomes Tony's mentor and best friend that helps him in his search for his identity. She teaches Antonio that he is the only one that can choose his fate. She has a huge impact on Tony, his views of his Catholic religion are now mixed in with the respect he feels for Ultiimas way of life. Also she lifts a curse placed on Tony's uncle Lucas , by Tenorio's daughters. This causes the Trementina daughters to die, and for Tenorio to seek revenge. Resulting in Ultima's death in which Antonio becomes her heir and has the privilege to bury her owl , that symbolized her life and served as protection throughout the book.
The story starts off with Antonio being six years old, and facing the dilemma of choosing a lifestyle. A Luna who are farmers or a Marez who are unstable cowboys. Ultima enters his life and teaches him a new way of viewing the world, and reveals that he will be "a man of learning". Antonio also learns about the Golden Crap, a fish only true believers can witness, which gives him something else to believe in other than religion and Ultima's mystical powers. It is not known what life Tony chooses, but with everything he learned and experienced with Ultima, it will be the right one. This book written by Rudolfo Anaya is a really captivating story, it has a lot of philosophy and moral values in it, but also has a lot of mystery an cultural background. The book is able to maintain the readers attention from beginning to end.
