This is a primer for modern India. However, Luce does appear to have a bias - against Hindu nationalism. I can't complain about that! At the same time, he seems to be recounting his observations from the lens of a fiscal conservative. Anyway, it really is a must-read for anyone interested in...

This book is very well written and very well researched. The author has put in a lot of effort and time to understand the real India. It is not an understatement to say that he understands India much better than Indians themselves.I am going with a thumbs up and a 5 star for this book.

Mr Luce is a great observer. His books are established in his powers of observation. However, observation does not always look at the two sides of the coin. It sees the coin, side after side. The reader has to make his counter observation, after reading the observations of Mr Luce.

As you can imagine, I read a lot about India. There is still so much more to learn, especially about our recent history. Well thought out and researched.

getAbstract recommends this excellent, well-written work of reportage on India. Edward Luce provides a colorful, striking picture of the country and its unconventional path to development. Within the past several years, numerous books have been published about so-called “Chindia,” the phenomenon of the economic emergence of the two most populous nations on earth. Luce makes it very clear that categorizing India with any other place, including the ever-intriguing China, is probably analytical and intellectual sloth. India presents such overwhelming, bewildering complexity that onlookers must take it on its own unique terms.

I liked this book because it gives a good insight into India and its diversity. The book is a bit prejudiced against the BJP and the Hindutva parties. And I quite agree with the concerns of the Author too. Overall a good book to read and the insights are good too. But I would also say it is not significantly different from the other such similar books.

on the positive side...well researched and written book..some of the one liners about Indian traditions, politicians etc that come almost in each chapter are truly amusing...

on the negative side...many times the solution offered to various problems India is facing are the same that u read everyday in newspapers/magazines..stress on education, infrastructure etc etc..so nothing new that u havent heard already...

    ~~Overall a gud read
