This is a primer for modern India. However, Luce does appear to have a bias - against Hindu nationalism. I can't complain about that! At the same time, he seems to be recounting his observations from the lens of a fiscal conservative. Anyway, it really is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the real India - not the metaphysical one.

An excellent read! Well thought out and researched. Unbiased. Does not invite the reader up opiniated paths.
However I found the matter depressing and fail to share the optimism he has, inspite of the sea of change the country is undergoing............ towards a new era.

The scio-political fabric has been captured well since independence. Luce has picked up the contradictions as India storms ahead on its path to modernity. Current mores and values are captured and the new thoughts and values that shape modern India is discussed at length. This book is not based on hearsay but on real "ground journalism". Nice Read!..B rgds..Mohan

One of the best books on India that I have read. Written in a journalistic style.. unbiased, neutral observer, balance between the good and bad, good perspectives and insights.
