I thought I understood the book until the end. Now I'm not so sure, especially after reading other interpretations of the story. The writing is beautiful with vivid detail and yet it didn't go on and on, I read it in half a day. It's a dark story that becomes more and more disturbing as you...

Difficult reading because the story bounces back and forth between the two major characters. Gabriel, whose real name is Anwell, and Finnegan meet when both are around 10 years old. Gabriel keeps his friendship with Finnegan a secret from his family. Also, Finnegan doesn't seem to have a family or home. He is a wild child who lives in the woods and survives by stealing. There are many twists and turns to this story, including child abuse, arson and murder. Recommended for an older reader.

This book was fun to read because it had a lot of twists and turns; it keep you guessing. I also liked the set up. Each chapter was either named Finnigan or Gabriel, the two main characters. And it would change back and forth from the twos points of views as it told the story. I wasn't very fond of the ending though. It was not what I expected and quite eccentric(vocab word...o yeah) in my opinion. But over all it was a pretty decent book.

This book was actually pretty good. The plot and the characters were interesting and it kept me wanting to read more. My only complaint would be that it's a bit slow moving or repetitive at times and I was a little confused by the end, but that's really more of a personal problem than anything else. It didn't take too long to read, so I would say it's definitely worth the time to give it a try for anyone who loves books. Also, it's one of the rare young adult books I think could have some real appeal for boys!

Though this book took me awhile to get into, once it finally grabbed my attention I couldn't put it down. It defiantly was one of the most creepy and dark books I've read in quite some time.

A haunting story of a dangerous and beautiful bargain between good and evil
Gabriel is 20 years old, and he is dying. Attended only by his Aunt Sarah, he lies in his childhood room immobile and subject to the dispiriting betrayals of a body he no longer controls. An emotional novel that will inspire you to take chances in life.

*SPOILERS* Anwell, at age 20, lies dying and looks back on his boyhood, in particular, the events as related to a friend he made in Finnegan. Anwell (or Gabriel, as Finnegan calls him) grew up as a town outcast in a dysfunctional family. At age 7, he accidentally suffocates his disabled older brother in a refrigerator when trying to shush his tantrum while their mother is sick. He meets Finnegan, a rough-edged independent boy with apparently no home or family. They agree to become brother reflections of each other; Gabriel is the angel, the good boy, and Finnegan does all the bad things. A series of arsons plagues the small town where Gaariel lives, all caused by Finnegan, although he is never caught. As the stakes are upped, Gabriel wants out of their pact. To me, it was uncertain if Finnegan was a real person or, as a reviewer suggested, if Gabriel was schizophrenic.
