I too found this book kind of weird or as I told one of my friends "kind of creepy". I have a friend who reads a lot of historical fiction and who is very knowledgable on the subject of this time period. She told me not to be shocked when it comes to the subject of incest. It went on quite a bit. It wasn't about what was proper. I am at the part where Beatrice discovers she is pregnant. I have to admit that I'd like to see what happens. Are any of you going to move on to ther other books in this trilogy? I'm on the fence..........

I'm at the end of this book and agree that it was long and a bit weird with the incest but it shows the decline of the character's soul as she tries to gain some place of ownership of the land in a male society. I like Gregory's other books but this was an earlier one so she was probably just getting her writing started.

I have read several and have enjoyed books by Phillipa Gregory, however, I was disappointed with this one. The incest was just too much, but since this is the first in a Trilogy should I continue with the second or not? So many books to read I'm not sure if it's worth the time!

I thought it was unnecessarily long, and poorly written in some parts. Unlike Gregory's other books, I thought this was a grossly over-sexualized book that was written such to make it interesting.
