I enjoyed this fast and easy Gothic read - my first Anya Seton book! Not much to say, the plot was predictable, yet absorbing, the characters were fine - Miranda was a bit too distant as the heroine, and the little historical tidbits were interesting, although they didn't quite flow with the storyline. However, I'm glad I started with a lesser rated Seton book and am thinking that is the way to go; start with bad (or not so great) and end with the good or better rated books. :P
One of the reasons I read this is because I've seen the film version of Dragonwyck playing on TCM and/or FMC, and I plan to catch it next time! :D

“This novel had all the hallmarks of a traditional Gothic thriller/romance -- the dark, castle-like house, ghosts, death, forbidden love.... It was wonderful. The female lead, Miranda, learned of the folly of her lust for material possessions and the man at the center of them, Nicholas Van Ryn, and after his death, she ends up married to the small town doctor, Jeff Turner, whom the reader knows she should have married in the first place. Very traditional pattern to the tale, but I still enjoyed it very much.”

This was a melodramatic soap opera from beginning to end. The descriptions, however, were good.”

This is a very good book. Its about a beautiful but naive girl who gets sent to her rich cousins' mansion in upstate New York to obtain refinement. But there is more than meets the surface in Nicholas Van Ryn. And when mysterious circumstances lead to the untimely death of his wife, the spookiness of the Dragonwyck mansion and an dark past may come back to haunt them. Very well written!”
“I opened this book a few years ago and could not put it down. Absurbing each page and escaping to the strange romantic dark world that Ms. Seton created. If you like gothic romance this is just the right cup of tea for you.”

I couldn't put the book down, I was kep guessing what might happen next. Was the wife poisoned, like I suspected? Is Nicholas really a good guy or is he most assuredly the bad guy? The main female character is "off the farm" and taken in by her relatives from the city, with less than altruistic motives... ”
