I liked it, it was different, just a bunch of conjecture about shakespeare and marlowe and all, but it was entertaining!

Unusually for a Turtledove book, I found it hard to get into. Once I did things were fine, but it's not on my favourites list for his writing.

I like Turtledove, and I liked the story behind this novel. His use of language, trying to use the vernacular of the period, reduced my enjoyment of the story. I wasn't thrilled by the novel, but did enjoy it.

The Spanish Armada wasn't destroyed in 1066 and is in control of Great Britain. Story centers on William Shakespear.

For a while I was in an "alternate history" vein, and Turtledove is the master. However, most of his stories spawn series (yuk!) Imagine my delight in finding a standalone book featuring one of my favorite authors, a Mr. William Shakespeare. The title of this book, "Ruled Britannia" has the Bard living in an England suffering under Spanish rule. And guess who gets to play the role of Luke Skywalker? Yep! (OK, he's more like Thomas Jefferson, or Thomas Paine, writing things to stir the pot of rebellion, but you get the point.)
