This book had so much potential, but the same adjectives are used over and over, the characters are dull and unbelievable, and it dumbs down Elizabeth I to a simpering teenager with a first crush. I expected a lot more from this book. There's too much...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Again, lacks historical accuracy.”

It took me a while to finish due to worldly things going on and also I felt like I kind of knew what was going to happen, but I am glad i finished it because apparently I did not. ”

The story is a fiction piece about her and her dedication to her country, along with her scandal with Robert Dudley. Reading this novel was very interesting since it showed a different perspective of the Queen and showed how there can be multiple sides to every story. The story was written from three different prespectives; each of which contained themes of jealousy, betrayal and people with constant agendas. Throughout the book Elizabeth is conflicted between the love and dedication she has for man and the love and dedication she has for her country. In the end she must choose one over the other for fear of losing both. ”

Although I enjoyed this book, I have read others about the Tutor era that were far more juicy and gripping, such as Boleyn Inheritance and The Constant Princess. I liked how Gregory changed narrators to describe what Amy (Robert Dudley's tormented wife) was experiencing while Robert played his games. Her take on Queen Elizabeth was a bit interesting and yet disappointing as she made Elizabeth out to be extremely nervous and flighty and unable to make a decision on her own. Gregory's portrayal made it difficult for me to sympathize with Elizabeth as she switched continually back and forth from a shrewd woman to a weak love-sick fool. However, when you read this book, keep in mind that this book is lightly-based on historical fact and indeed is truely a work of fiction, and then I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. ”
