I prefer Philippa Gregory's books about an actual person from history.

Gregory takes on a male character and makes him touching, convincing and a bit hard to love. If you enjoy other historical fiction by Gregory, you should enjoy this one. But those readers who seek out this author for her female characters may be slightly disappointed. I thought it was worthwhile.

I truly enjoyed this book about a gardener in 1600's England. Lots of political intrigue, fascinating characters, specially Sir Robert Cecil.

my version of beach/light reading, except i am not on the beach. takes place just after the death of queen elizabeth first & centers around a gardener in the royal court. very detailed re gardening & it didn't bore me !(i don't garden). I did think the turn of events with the gardener & Lord Buckingham was a little unlikely given John the gardener's personality but oh well, an entertaining read overall

Philippa Gregory took me to a slightly different English historical period with this novel. After Elizabeth I and on to Kings James and Charles. I found the slightly different time a nice twist, and I feel I learned from it. I also very much enjoyed that the novel centered on an English gardener; I know next to nothing about gardening or plants and felt this was a learning experience. As always, I was fascinated by Ms. Gregory's depth of knowledge of the time period and her ability to fully transplant the reader to that era and set of places. This novel has a sequel, VIRGIN EARTH, also incredible.
