I agree with you completely about this book. I read it too for a bookclub (SparkPeople). I had a hard time accepting it as a "mystery." It spent entirely too much time with the past of the mom and dad. I knew who Heather was before the end also. I suspected she was not Heather as did the police. It was when the police asked her about the denim purse that I knew.
I cannot find much to add to your review. You pretty much covered it. I got the book from the library. It was not a book that hooked me and kept me reading late into the night, which is what I consider a good mystery.

Wow...truly conflicting reviews! Sometimes I don't trust 'International Best Sellers'...but I think I'll give this one a shot.

I have only read about 70 pages of this book, but so far it seems terribly disjointed.

Drove me up a wall! The twist that was supposedly such a surprise...not so much! The writing was quite poor...little things that bugged me the whole book. I wasn't even upset when my youngest dog got a hold of it and chewed the spine a little. I would not recommend this book.

This book is well-written, unpredictable, and intriguing. Lippman does a wonderful job creating an honesty and an uneasiness in her characters that kept a semi-slow story on its toes. However, she deserves the most praise for her unique, creepy and brilliant ending that turns the tired, familiar "kidnapped girls/usual suspects" theme on its head. Definitely worth the read.
