Its a sci-fi novel which envisions our future ...As the masses celebrate the New Millenium, there is a chronic shortage of water, food, power ... Half the population of New York is out on the roads ... The main character - Andy Rusch's life is a similar story ... Its all pretty depressing, but its also a reminder of the consequences our future generations would face, unless we embrace sustainable development before it is too late. ”

Hollywood of course, not staying true to the book, but then again, both book and film have merits. The film added a new twist, the famous ending where horror of horros, soylent green is p..... well, you get it. Nothing like that in the book. it is a dour future we are all headed for but need ed to be read. i wish i knew what the adjunct (after the end of the book) was called. i came across it in a book of famous sci-fi short stories from the Library once and have no idea what it was called. It just took the story that little bit further. Seen the film, do it the courtesy of reading the book., Evelyn S”

I read it without realizing beforehand that the movie Soylent Green was based on it. I loved the movie too, so this one will not go under my "better than movie" tag (but had I read it first I may have). I really enjoy Harry Harrison's books in general anyway.”
