And here it is: Chandler's first novel. Chandler may not have had the credentials of his predecessor, the P.I.-turned-author Dashell Hammitt, but he did have one advantage: a thorough and subtle eye for human passions and behavior.

And The Big Sleep majors on human passions. According to the legend, Chandler himself couldn't figure out who murdered a certain character, but the emotional revelations brought out at each twist of the plot are utterly unforgettable--and fundamentally...

    The movie (which rules) is a little easier to follow once you read the original. It is completely impossible to not envision Bogart as Marlowe, though (even though he has been played by other classic actors like Dick Powell).
