This is not a plot-driven book with catchy dialogue or anything. It's a quiet, simple book about a quiet, simple life that leaves a quiet, simple feeling in your soul. It is beautifully written. I've read it many times and plan to read it many more.

A story of a gentle man, raised in an orphanage, who finally returns to the home he dreamed about. He is a simple man who becomes the town barber. You'll meet his friends and fall in love with them as you do Jayber. A prefect book for reading on a winter evening.

I love everything I have read by Wendell Berry. Novels, essays, poetry, all of it. Challenging assumptions, mind expanding, yet writing of the basics of life. Relationships, stewardship, visions of the past, personal responsibility, hope for the future in spite of circumstance.

Overall pretty good book. Great message of love. The book started off great and then was very slow in the middle, finally picked up at the end. The main character tends to go off on tangents of thought often and then you lose the story line. Great writing style, I know I would appreciate it more if I were retired and felt I could spend more time enjoying the writing style.

This book is the first I've read by Wendell Berry - I picked it up from a list of former Summer Reading books for incoming freshmen at Sewanee. It's beautiful! For anyone who lives in the South, especially the rural South, this book lays out an old order of human love - love of land, and love of community. Berry's worldview is profoundly humane, spiritually rich, but never pious or pontificating. I recognize my small town in the one he's imagined, and I am glad for the insight.
