Great book...and very well done...however, it does tend to get a bit long in the tooth towards the end...almost like the author really didn't know how to end it.

This is an ambitious book, but an uneven one. When it's good, it's very good, but much of it drags. In general, at 800+ pages, it's far too long. Nothing much happens besides setting the scene for the first 400 pages (that is a l-o-n-g scene-setting, let me tell you), then you hold your breath racing through the next 200 pages, they're so good. The last two hundred are a let down, but things do get wrapped up very tidily. If there were an "abridged" version of this book, it just might be perfect.

abook that seemed to peak directly to me as the child of an Army officier. It was nostalgic, but also a gripping murder mystery.

This strange and bizarre book clearly suggests how powerful the family unit is and how so easily it can become corrupted.

Very well written and research however I was a bit bored with all of the government conspiracy stuff that went on in the middle. Obviously, I muddled through and really enjoyed the ending.

Really enjoyed this book. I liked MacDonald's writing style. Good mystery.

note: I have the "yellow" cover version. This was first published in paperback in two colours at the same printing, one with yellow cover, one with black. This was "my" era - really related to her excellent description of school, family and society in Ontario at the time during cold war. Loosely based on a criminal case of the time - this was case had major impact on our lives as children during that time.
