What could have been an excellent fictionalization of post-colonial Africa is dragged down by an insanely large page count and constant repetition, that does nothing to further the narrative, paint a picture, or even evoke a cyclical story arc. A sharp editor could have trimmed this into an extremely powerful novella, but instead the reader gets a bloated novel that is repetitive and tiring to trudge through.
