“The beginning of King's epic Magnum Opus The Dark Tower series. This comparitively simple tale begins us on a path that for many of us encompassed thousands of pages and the vast majority of our adult lives following the Gunslinger Roland Deschain on his quest for the Dark Tower. I just realized while writing these reviews that my two favorite books in the series, this and Wizard and Glass are probably not coincidentally the works that have the least amount of supporting characters from our earth. The tale that begins with one of the greatest opening lines in literature..."The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed" will hook you with the epic audacity of it's ambition and if you are like me you won't be able to rest until you too have reached the base of the Dark Tower and if you are like me you will probably be able to forgive King's inability to realize the stories full potential with his later volumes. Despite that disappointment you will probably agree that the journey was worthwhile and your life is richer for following King on this journey which for it's faults is without a doubt the very definition of the word "epic"”
