I quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The vivid scenes Balzac painted did not strike me as too descriptive. When the countess showed up at the ball with the lemon diamond dress, I was genuinely outraged. and Goriot's last harangue is supremely touching and poignant.

Everyone who only want their children to be happy should read this. It is an impossibility of course, no happiness can be gained without learning how to get it in the first place.
