The emphasis of "Old Goriot" is on the world in which the characters live, where "...social success is everything, it is the key to power" and the sad and often vicious characters who lived in it. From the unhappy Victorine who "...in her youthful misfortune...was like a young shrub with its leaves turning yellow, when newly transplanted to an adverse soil", to the mean-spirited widow Vauquer whose only care was to see how much money she could ring out of her impoverished lodgers. Poor old Goriot dies alone with his daughters unwilling or unable to present themselves at the deathbed of their own father until it was too late. He dies and is buried in poverty, as his daughters send no money for his burial. "The chariot of civilization...continues its triumphant course."”
“First book that I have read from this author. Looking forward to read more of his writings, I enjoy his writing style. I like the story and the message within or at least my interpretation of what the message suppose to be.”

For its time it must have been a real success, especially because the author brought something completely new to the literature. But today it is a bit dusty (yet readable) and no one can say one can become fascinated by it. Yet, it is an important book in literature.”
