Renko is in disfavor, as usual, and he's in love, as usual. But this time he's also trying to father a really wierd kid and trying to untangle a compllicated war crime that nobody's willing to talk about. Why does his lover leave him for a murderer? What exactly is wrong with Zhenya? Tight plotting, a great character, wit, a sophisticated but unpretentious style. Ahhh. Grade: A”

This one's back in Russia and he's still ends up a down-and-outsider. The hardcore veterans of the Chechen wars are worthy opponents and the delinquent young chessmaster is a nice side story.”

It was a book that actually made me want to read again. I will even make a promise to myself to read the other 5 books in the series so far. The story line is very good and exciting. All-in-all it was a very good book. I think that the school should definitely stock more of this very good author’s novels. Thanks for the recommendation on the school’s intranet.

“Another Arkady Renko novel. This time there is trouble with ex-soldiers who served in Chesnia. It took a while before the story gripped me, and Renko is becoming a bit too formulaic to my liking. I prefer the previous books.”

It was so convaluted that I had to really concentrate to follow the plot. I still enjoyed the intrigue and mentality of Moscow which is similar to that in South Africa.”
