I've been doing a lot of reading of Russian history, and I've come to the same conclusion. I've found that whenever Russia has a strong leader - ie. someone who is not afraid to shed a little bit of peasant blood and do some underhanded deeds - the population adores him and as a whole the country grows in the eyes of the world. Its more democratic and 'weak' leaders that seem to fail.

There's another recent book about stalin entitled "The Court of the Red Tsar". You start to get the sense that in its history Russia has had more than its share of strong singular leaders, rather than a leadership via consensus. Your thoughs?

A very different picture of Stalin. It says that Stalin was an admirer of Hitler. Most accounts seems to be true.
