Once I was willing to trudge through the dull parts, I found one of the most unique science fiction stories I've ever read. I just wish I could say the same about "Fiasco"...”

If it wasn't for Lem's tendency to get lost in his imagined history and in-depth science descriptions, this would have been a five easily.”

Lem's imagination, creativity, and knowledge of diverse fields of study are staggering. This novel depicts the works of scientists on a distant planet, Solaris, who are trying to make contact with the seemingly conscious ocean which envelops the planet. Simultaneously the story depicts man's, and mankind's, inability to know himself.

“ It is kind of a ghost story set in space though in this case since the spirits are really exterterestrial beings this brings up all kinds of interesting questions about man's place in the universe.
I like how really alien and unwordly the beings trying to communicate really are and how the book so successfully dealt with that. Lem could have done more with the concept and in fact this book inspired other writers and filmakers to take their run at the idea but even after imitation this book still holds up amazingly well. ”
