This is an important book. Seligman explains how (non-bipolar) depression affects people along a spectrum of severity, what causes it, how it can be treated (with more permanent results than medication) and prevented even in mild form using his technique of making optimistic explanations. And he shows in what situations it is and isn't appropriate to use that technique. This has been his life's work, and it shows in the amount of empirical research he's done to support his claims.
