My experience reading these “Longer Stories from the Last Decade” was revelatory. I'd known that Chekhov is revered for his short stories but had never read a word of them, so I came to these pieces fresh. Soon into the first story, as Emily Dickinson would say, I felt “as if the top of my head were taken off.” He’s so good he’s almost uncomfortable to read – you know, that rare mixture of joy and pain one sometimes gets in the presence of true genius? Didn’t Like It

Considered the "king" of the short story, I'm reading Chekhov for the some writing inspiration. He knows how to write authentic dialogue, and I really like he gives each of his characters those quirks that make them real and memorable.

    I recently bought this collection and was impressed by the quality of translation and the stories selected. "The Cossacks", however, is my favorite Chekhov story and unfortunately is not included. Does anyone know of a good collection to include this story?
