Timothy Zahn is my second favorite Star Wars author and I love this two book series. There is a great deal of intrigue and action. Also, these books have a lot of politcs, plus two quests that happen at the same time. It's a really great read.

As the conclusion of a duology, this was a pretty good way to end things. As projected when I read Specter of the Past, most of the action was here and we had more than our fair share of both epic space battles and of course intelligent political maneuvering.

As much as I had some doubts about certain aspects of the plot initially, this book helped explain things more and keep things plausible (from a Star Wars expanded universe perspective).

In many ways, I feel this was Timothy Zahn's way of taking care of the many key characters he introduced in his Heir to the Empire trilogy by tying up loose ends, giving them new roles in the New Republic and of course opening doors for new possibilities. This book is also a bit of a precursor to the later New Jedi Order series and thus a helpful stepping stone in that direction.

I love all the Timothy Zahn books in the Star Wars Universe. This is no exception. That said, I didn't enjoy the Hand of Thrawn series as much as his original Star Wars triology. Grand Admiral Thrawn was a tremendous character in the original trilogy but he died. I would prefer to just remember how great his character was and not dilute it by trying to input him into future stories.

the first of a duology that further explores the relationship of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade, an intriguing character Timothy Zahn created for the Star Wars universe. This action adventure is rife with political intrigue, betrayal, subterfuge and stealth attacks. What I really liked about all of Zahn's Star Wars books is his attention to character. He focused less on the military jargen and more on character interplay, the stuff of wonderful stories.
