Liked It“A fun book to read...I must admit, I haven't been a huge fan of Elmore Leonard, as the books have a sameness to them, but this one was better than most I've read. It really gives a nice feel of Cuba back around the time of the Spanish-American war, and the characters are mostly interesting.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“I did not enjoy this book at all. At time it was choppy, as if an editor had never looked at it an not realized that some sentences were not even complete or grammatically accurate. It was over simplified, and basic. Characters were barely developed. It seemed as if I was reading a screenplay...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I did not enjoy this book at all. At time it was choppy, as if an editor had never looked at it an not realized that some sentences were not even complete or grammatically accurate. It was over simplified, and basic. Characters were barely developed. It seemed as if I was reading a screenplay and not a novel. It's the kind of book designed for people who normally don't like to read. I will not read another of Leonard's books. This one is about a horsedealer/smuggler who gets caught up in the Spanish-American war in Cuba. ”

I actually only wound up listening to the last half, and almost gave up on it, because I didn't realize I had started on disc 6.... In inputting the discs in my car CD player, I forgot to go back to the beginning. So when the audio started, I was thinking, "Boy, this is a strange place to be dropped into the story." It was only when the narrator announced what chapter he was on that I realized my mistake. But I kept going, and managed to figure out what was going on to the point that I didn't need to start over.
It's by no means a landmark piece of fiction. But it was entertaining, and I liked the historical references to the Spanish-American War. Sure made the commute pass more quickly, which was really my only goal here.”
