Mala is a Nerakian who lives on the planet Nerak. She longs for the day when she can visit Earth and meet this man named Sheriff that she has seen in her grandmother's documentary film Debbie Does the Sheriff. The scenes of Debbie running a brick over their body before she makes love with Sheriff beneath a waterfall has Mala very curious and excited. They do not have running water on their planet, nor do they have men, and Mala wants to experience both and more. She wants to visit the Earth from her grandmother's diary and one day takes a ship and goes. Unfortunately, she crash lands in the woods, just on the outskirts of a small town in Texas.
Mason McKinley is the local Sheriff and aside from dealing with a troop of reporters who have converged on his small town because Harlan, one of the locals has claimed sightings of Bigfoot around Devil's Bend, he now has to investigate a UFO sighting near Devil's Bend as well.
When Mala comes stumbling out of the woods, head bleeding and obviously injured, Mason does what any red-blooded lawman would do: he takes her to the nearest emergency room for treatment. The fact that she's wandering around the woods and evidently can't remember anything doesn't mean she's an alien because aliens don't exist, they just don't. So she must be suffering from amnesia, that's it.
But the longer Mason is around Mala the more he comes to believe that she is different and something is not quite right about her. She's never seen a shower before, and when they make love or she eats food, especially chocolate, strange lights show up overhead and all the electrical appliances in his house go haywire. Mason's not sure what's going on, except for the fact that he is really starting to fall for Mala and doesn't know how he'll exist without her.
It takes a visit from Mala's companion unit, Barton before Mason starts really coming around, but by then, will it be too late before Mala is discovered by Harlan and the reporters, or worse, taken away from him by the Elders to go back to Nerak?
Kelley's writing is fast-paced and lively, with fresh, humorous dialogue, wonderful h/h chemistry and engaging secondary characters. The subplot involving Mason's friend Carol and Mala's companion unit Barton was an interesting, colorful story as were the characters, and added just the right finishing touch to an already entertaining work.
This was a sexy, laugh-out-loud funny book and a great start to a new series by new-to-me author Karen Kelley.”
