Even better than the first book in the series. A long and detailed read, but very entertaining throughout.

Stirling's second book in the Dies the Fire trilogy. I enjoyed the first (and third) book more.

Advance warning: There is no war in this book as you might assume from the title. There is a skirmish and the factions are heading to war -- but not in this installment. Therefore...

Second in the trilogy started with Dies the Fire. Great alternative history/post apocalyptic yarn.

This is the second book in the series, and I must admit it is not as good as the first one. This does not mean it is bad. The character development in the first book (Dies the Fire) carries this book. Perhaps the fact that the Change has already happened made this book a little less explosive.

It is a good read though and comes across at the end as a nice smooth bridge between book one and what appears to be a great book three (A meeting at Corvallis).

I recommend this book based more on the series as a whole than on the book itself.
The characters remain strong and the storyline does not waver...the world is brutal without cars, guns computers etc.

Great read, can't wait to get in to the next one and get into the war which did not actually happen in this book.

It's a little disconcerting that, two books into what looks to be a long series, we're not any further into finding out what the hell happened to cause "The Change".

Maybe I'm more of a hard SF reader, but shouldn't we see more about the intelligentsia of this age trying to figure out what are the true parameters of this new world? How about a hint that something "bigger" is at play here?

A little slower moving than the first novel but the last 60 pages are outstanding and worth the wait.

Wow, what a great cast of characters. I looked forward to continuing the series, and subsequent books did not disappoint.

Advance warning: There is no war in this book as you might assume from the title. There is a skirmish and the factions are heading to war -- but not in this installment. Therefore (Simpson's Comic Book Dude's voice): Worst title e-ver.

ETA: This trilogy is part of Stirling's "Emberverse." A new, follow-up series is being published starting in 2007 with "The Sunrise Lands."
