One of my all-time favorite books! The actual exorcism is beside the point in this book. It is about guilt over leaving loved-ones behind, redemption, and loving your fellow man, even if it seems impossible to do so. I can't help but wonder: if Father Karras had met Father Merrin even a few...

On my top 10 list of scariest stories (and I'm an atheist even :). The detail in this book was incredible--the research Blatty must have done on the subject comes through and makes it very realistic. The hints at character flaws and internal struggles as well as the very subtle life crisis flesh this story out well. It's also, in my opinion, a great detective story. Imagery from scenes in this book is easily recalled 8 years later :)

Never much a fan of the horror genre, but I have vivid memories of reading this one very bitter cold January weekend in Madison, Wisconsin. Once I started it I couldn't sleep or eat until I finished it.

Scariest, creepiest book ever. Disturbing and distressing to say the least. Read it when I was in fift or sixth grade, blame my mother for leaving it in the family den.

Out of all the old seventies authors, here's my vote. If this one doesn't get you, your heart's not pumping.

An interesting book. Almost a case study approach. Terrifying in places. Raises some questions that will probably never be answered, but will be debated nonetheless.

A very eerie book on exorcism. Much scarier than the movie!
