This book by Charles Petzold is very informative as it take you through from the simple GUI operation to more advanced multi-threaded and DLLs. I very much liked the approach because as a beginner you want to see something on the screen. Examples that deal with the text out and basic drawing, mouse operation, menus and icons were very simple and easy to understand. The advanced part of the book deals with MDI, Multitasking and Multithreading, DLLS, Sound and Music and finally sockets. A very good book to have by your side.

This book is the bible for programming Windows. It assumes a complete understanding of the C++ programming language. When I read this book, I needed Bjarne Stroustrup's "The C++ Programming Language" as a reference. Difficult, but well worth the effort. There's not a book on the market that does it better.
