“I've never had to say this before, but the film vastly outshines the novel. Gaiman's wit here lies in the minutia, but the fun, vibrant details unfortunately cannot hold the story together. He couldn't even make a fallen star into a compelling character; worse yet, he failed to effectively destroy the villain - or give her an oddly endearing twist, like many modern fairy tales have done. I wanted to like the novel, but ultimately it just falls flat for me. Save yourself some time and rent the movie.”
