Writing style was annoying at times - but it lent itself to the nature of the book. After considering not finishing it several times I found that after completing it all came together. So glad I read it. Would recommend to read for those that want or need a view of a different life style from the white, middle class educated masses.

This was based on a true story and a very sad one at that. Ruthie Mae was abused throughout her formative years, but somehow managed to carve out an existance that lead to her everntual happiness. All of her step sisters mistreated her at one time or another, she never knew her father, and barely knew her mother, who died a tragic death when Ruthie was still a child.
This book takes a look at what we sometimes call family and how fractured it really is. One person's reality may be another person's nightmare. There are a lot's of downers in this book, but there are a few up moments as well. It is an interesting book that may help shed light on ones own family relations and the word "family" in general.

I finished this book in like 3 days!! it would have been faster if I could have gotten away from the kids! it was very deep.... it left you hating some of the family and gave you a real idea of what it means to overcome!she worked on her life and made a way when there really wasn't one

OMG! There aren't enough words to express how quickly I DEVOURED this book. Talk about poignant. I laughed out loud at some passages, and wanted to cry at other parts. I wonder if 'Ruthie' is still alive and what she is doing? Through it all, she managed to not only survive, but SURPASS her greatest expectations. I'm sure her story has to have helped others out there like her. Some of those relatives I just wanted to pimp-slap for their behavior!

I just kept thinking, "Wow. These things were happening to her during my lifetime." Good story.

A sad book, but I loved every minute of it! Shame we never heard from Ruthie Bolton again. She's an awesome writer.
