“Jim Butcher is a master of character development and imagination. Furies of Calderon is high fantasy which is a far step from the Dresden Files. It takes place around Tavi a young sheepherder without a fury (fury is a special elemental power that bonds with his people.) When he heads out with his uncle Bernard to gather lost sheep they have a run in with Marat raiders. The last time the Marat were in the valley a war began. From this point everything takes off at lightning speed.....Tavi saves what he thinks is a lost slave named Amara who is sent by the first lord to help with the invasion. Isana is Tavi's aunt and her fury is Rill who can control water. She is a powerful healer.
Just no way to review this book and have it make sense. There are so many story lines that weave together I'm amazed Jim was able to keep up. If the rest of the series is this good it will jump to my top 5 fantasy series of all time.

“My least favorite book in the series. I actually avoided reading the other books in the series after this one. I no longer have the book and want to read it again to see if it improves after having read the other books.”

Furies of Calderon was filled with plot twists and action. The main characters like Tavi, Amara and others give the book life and even the supporting characters make the book better. Tavi, is the only known person in Alera without a fury. Furies are needed for everything, sending messages, flying, fighting and even menial tasks like lighting lamps. As he struggles through his disability, he learns that not everything depends on furies. From his experiences and the new people he meets and gets to understand, Tavi becomes braver and stronger. I thought that this book was a great beginning for the series and I can't wait to read the other books. ”

What a great escape this is. The world Jim Butcher has created is unique. His characters, both male and female, are strong and dynamic.”
