Troubles coming to Calderon Valley in Alera. Few people have any idea what's going on, and even they do not know much. They must find a way to protect the Calderon Valley, before it's too late.

- Tavi: The protagonist of the series. Unlike other Alerans, he can't call upon furies. All he wants is his uncle's trust and the ability to go to the Academy.
- Bernard: Tavi's Uncle and a Steadholder in the Calderon Valley. Brother to Isana. He is an earthcrafter and woodcrafter.
- Isana: Aunt of Tavi, sister of Bernard. Watercrafter.
- Amara: A young woman completing her training to become a cursor. Aircrafter.
- Doroga: Clan-head of one of the Marat tribes.
- Kitai: Doroga's child.
