I was surprised that I enjoyed this so much. It takes you through the beginnings of Rome from a traders campsite to the demise of Julius Caeser. You follow the story of one family's ancestors, their rises and falls as Rome changes. I thought this might be a bit bitty as you don't really get into the characters but it is all put together really well.

This book has gotten me motivated to move beyond Saylor's fictitious account and dig a bit deeper into the history of ancient Rome. Bundle that with some Italian lessons & it'll be time to plan the next trip!

I couldn't finish this boring effort. I got through 60% and knew it was not going to get any better. Any college text book on the history of Rome would be more interesting and entertaining.

Parts seem like a collection of short stories, but there are greater themes and storylines running throughout, and the historical detail is quite well done.

The most intriguing and detailed account of the origin and years of the Roman Republic. Reads like a novel, but is rich with facts and history. Saylor uses the Pinarius family to weave a story through the historic and legendary Roman world.

Wonderful historical fiction. Well researched it covers the period from the beginning of Rome through till the end of the Republic. Follows a fictional family through the history of early Rome.

A little bit to dragging towards the end. However, I enjoyed learning some historical facts, politics, religion and culture of the Romans from its foundation to the republic era.
