good overview of mormonism, from a very well respected non-LDS journalist's perspective. given people's universal inability to see their own blemishes and warts, this well-written, well-documented, and factual examination of the LDS church - from it's 19th century origins to the 2008 presidential election - is a revealing overview of a very complicated topic.

An interesting take on Mormons from a non-Mormon perspective. I really found it fascinating, though they did get a few things wrong, but overall I felt it was a fair and mostly thoroughly researched book

Don't let its thickness intimidate you - as long as you can be patient through the historical facts the Ostling's provide the perfect balance of fair and critical discussion. Their analysis is both informative and fascinating and should resonate for anyone who reads it.

Of all my books on LDS, this is one of my top five, and maybe my favorite overview. Granted, Mr.Ostling is Presbyterian, which some, perhaps most, LDS will find troubling, but he and his wife make an excellent reporting team. Richard has done over 20 cover stories for TIME magazine, and his work here is top notch. Neither a polemic against the church, or favorable PR from an outsider, this is a balanced work of history and commentary. A great book to give someone who wants to understand 'this Mormon thing' but is not into a diatribe.

This revised editions gives a wide overview of LDS. Having friends who are LDS this was a very informative book. It gives the reader a better understanding of the religion, the founder and the rules. Most useful to anyone who is wanting to learn more about a religion that is American
